1) Pahang Technology Resources Sdn Bhd

This is great news.

State Science, Innovation, Information and Information Technology Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin said that the state government has approved the setting up of Pahang Technology Resources Sdn Bhd.

This government-linked company will focus on expanding the biotechnology and information, technology and communication industry.

Among the steps taken was the development of the Pahang Technology Park that would act as a catalyst to spur high-tech related industries.

Pahang had also received an allocation of RM1mil from the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry to finance a research and development project on haruan (a freshwater fish) for biomedical products. This project is led by Prof Dr Abdul Manan Jais from Universiti Malaysia Pahang.

In addition, a Cyber Centre will be launched soon and investors would be invited to set up operations in the Cyber Centre covering three areas - Kuantan, Gambang and Tanjung Lumpur.

Datuk Mohd Sharkar also said that under the masterplan, the state has estimated investments worth RM170mil to be based in the Cyber Centre between year 2007 and 2012.

Well, looks like Pahang is also moving forward in step with the advancing world.

2) Fiesta Media Idola 2007

The annual Fiesta Media Idola 2007, held from 13th April to 15th April, 2007, closed under a shower of colourful fireworks display and a concert by singer Mawi, with over 30,000 people in the stands at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan.

Tengku Muda of Pahang, Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah, extinguished the carnival flame to mark the end of the three-day sports carnival.

10 teams with more than 700 artistes and media representatives had competed in futsal, netball and bowling tournaments.

At the close, MyTeam emerged as the top team, winning more competitions than other competing teams comprising Kelab Shahzan Muda, New Straits Times-Berita Harian, TV3, ntv7, Kelab Media Pahang, Utusan Malaysia, Karangkraf, Astro, and RTM.

This year saw added fun with the introduction of telematches and rodeo rides. Hopefully next year more teams will join the fun.

3) National Gasing Festival

Persekutuan Gasing Malaysia (Pegama) organised a National Gasing (Top Spinning) Festival at the municipal field in Temerloh on April 20 to April 22, 2007.

A total of 365 participants from all over the country (except Kedah) took part in the three-day top spinning competition.

Selangor emerged champions in both the adult and youth categories. Pahang came in second in the adult category and Negri Sembilan was runner-up in the youth section.

This national level "main gasing" competition organised by Pegama had in fact been held since 1990.

And the great news is that top-spinning, traditionally called "main gasing" in Malay, will be among the folk games that will be gazetted by the Government as a national heritage.

4) Pahang Football Association - New President

Tengku Muda Pahang, Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah has been elected unopposed as Pahang Football Association president, replacing his brother the Tengku Mahkota, Tengku Abdullah.

Tengku Abdullah who helmed Pahang FA for 23 years, had earlier declined to retain the post, while Tengku Abdul Rahman was its deputy president since 1984.

The Pahang FA's annual general meeting also saw the posts of deputy president and vice-president for the 3-year term (2007-2010) uncontested.

State Financial Officer Datuk Muhammad Safian Ismail is now the deputy president, state exco member Datuk Shahiruddin Ab Moin vice-president I, and Datuk Mustaffar Kamal Hamid vice-president II.

The 10 committee members are Datuk Abd Rahman Daud, Tok Muda Talib Sulaiman, Datuk Akbar V.V. Abu, Abdullah Mohd Din, Datuk Taufek Razak, Shafik Fauzan Sharif, Tajuddiin Abdullah, Krishnan Sinnaya, Hanafi Daud and Halimi Kamaruzzaman.

5) Sungai Pahang (Pahang River) International River Rafting Expedition 2007

This expedition started on Sunday, the 29th April and ended (as I'm writing this e-zine) at Bandar Pekan Diraja on Sunday, 6th May 2007.

The expedition was launched by Pahang's Tengku Mahkota, Tengku Abdullah, in Kuala Lipis.

6) Events in May 2007 in Pahang

Three exciting events will be held in Pahang in May, no doubt adding to the festivities surrounding Visit Malaysia Year 2007. So don't forget to come... and enjoy.

  • Rompin "Orang Asli" Festival
  • This festival will be held on 19 - 20 May 2007 in Rompin. Organised by the Pahang Tourism Action Council (Majlis Tindakan Pelancongan Negeri Pahang), it will highlight the culture of the "Orang Asli" (aborigines) in Pahang, especially those in the district of Rompin.

  • Pahang International Gamelan Festival
  • This music festival will be held from 26 - 27 May 2007, in Kuantan, and will see gamelan presentations not only by groups from Malaysia but also gamelan groups from abroad.

  • Pekan Fest 2007
  • This Fest will be kicked off with a grand opening on May 30 by HRH Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang.

To be held from May 30 - June 3 in Pekan, the Fest will place emphasis on trade and industry, besides education.

The exhibition will see the participation of government agencies, private sectors, academic institutions, ministries as well as small and medium-sized industries.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is Member of Parliament for Pekan, said: "The event is about educating the community and making it known that education is key to a better future."
