Fiesta Media Idola (or "Media and Idols Festivity"), a three-day festive event involving Malaysian entertainment artistes and the Malaysian mass media, was held in Kuantan, Pahang, from the 14th to 16th April 2006 (Friday - Sunday).
This year (2006) represents the second year of the event, and from the popular responses and enthusiastic support given by the Kuantan, Pahang and Malaysian fans, this would certainly be an annual event worth attending in the future.
Of course, it should be noted that the Fiesta Media Idola was the brainchild idea and initiative of YAM Tengku Muda Pahang, Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah. He was duly supported by his lovely wife, YABhg Cik Puan Muda Pahang, Julita Aishah Abdul Latiff.
The Fiesta Media Idola (or in short "FMI") was mooted by YAM Tengku Muda Pahang with the objective of fostering closer co-operation and relations between entertainment artistes (singers, actors, musicians, composers, etc.) and the mass media (radio, television, magazine and newspaper publishers, etc.) through their participation in the friendly (although competitive) games and sporting events held.
Months before the event, YAM Tengku Muda Pahang and YABhg Cik Puan Muda Pahang, had tirelessly gone round to promote and invite the mass media, stars and superstars to the event. And for the second time too, KRU was appointed by YAM Tengku Muda Pahang as the event manager to make the Fiesta Media Idola a success.
Twelve (12) contingents took part in this year's Fiesta Media Idola compared to 9 contingents last year. Stars and superstars, males and females, of the Malaysian entertainment industry took part.
Journalists, radio and television deejays, and employees of the mass media were keen participants in the FMI. All were there in the name of friendly sports and fun.
Five sports and games events were held, namely, soccer, futsal, bowling, netball and athletics.
The twelve (12) contingents that competed in the five events were as follows: -
THE OPENING CEREMONY
In the evening of the 14th of April 2006, Stadium Darul Makmur in Kuantan, the venue for the opening ceremony, was already filled to capacity.
Fans and spectators from Pahang and other states of Malaysia, came in droves to watch the opening ceremony of the Fiesta Media Idola.
The spectators were first entertained with songs by popular singers, including Hazami, and Malaysian cultural dances by cultural troupes including more than 300 school-children from schools in the vicinity of Kuantan.
This was followed with a march past by all the contingents in front of KDYMM the Sultan of Pahang and KDYMM the Sultanah Pahang, Sultanah Kalsom, KDYTM Tengku Mahkota Pahang and KDYTM Tengku Puan Pahang, Tengku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandar, and YAM Tengku Muda Pahang, Tengku Abdul Rahman and YABhg Cik Puan Muda Pahang, Julita Aishah Abdul Latif.
The march past by the contingents also included some gimmicks and the surprise performances added spontaneous fun to entertain the crowd.
After the welcoming speech to spectators and contingents by YAM Tengku Muda Pahang (which was done in a cleverly funny Malay pantun style), the FMI 2006 was then officially launched by DYMM the Sultan of Pahang, HRH Sultan Ahmad Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Abu Bakar.
The flames for the FMI Games torch were brought to the stadium by two charming artistes. One torch was carried by the ambassadress of FMI 2006, the up and coming actress, Fasha Sanda, and the other torch, surprise of surprises, by Malaysia’s number one singing diva, Siti Norhaliza.
Both of them came running into the stadium carrying a flaming torch each, and they were really fit and strong, with the running round the stadium at, to me, quite a fast pace.
The flaming torches were then handed over to HRH the Sultan who then lighted the FMI flames in the Stadium, through an innovative method – the flames moved through specially connected wires to light the big FMI Games torch. Like the Olympic Games, the flames would burn for the three days of festivities.
And when the lights in the stadium were switched off, the spectators were jolted by loud explosions. But it was from the dazzling and glittering fireworks, lighting up the skies around the Stadium and Kuantan town.
HRH the Sultan of Pahang then graciously walked down to the field to meet and talk to the head of contingents and the participants.
The sports and games of the Fiesta Media Idola started in the Stadium with athletics events. There were the men’s and women’s 50, 80 and 100 meters races, and 4x100 men and 4x80 women relays. These events saw participation by many popular actors, actresses and singers including A.C Mizal, Awie, Norman Hakim and Que Aidar. They all look very fit, probably after days of training and practice.
The opening ceremony and events for the three days were also telecasted live by satellite television station ASTRO and also broadcasted live by Radio ERA.
The games were played at several sports venues around Kuantan. And wherever they were held, the fans were there in the hundreds (and thousands) to give support to their favorite stars.
Bowling, for instance, was held at the Berjaya Megamall Bowling Center. The place was filled with fans and spectators to the brim, with the manager of the Megamall saying that the bowling alley had never, since it was opened a few years ago, seen such huge crowds as on that day.
Of course, the crowds were there to see Akademi Fantasia’s currently popular artiste, Mawi, in action. Mawi in fact came out third in the bowling event. Not bad. Other popular singers, and artistes were also there to take part. And, as usual, they obliged their fans by signing autographs after their events.
Besides the bowling alleys at the Berjaya Megamall, sports facilities at the Sukpa sports complex in Bandar Indera Mahkota and the Stadium Darulmakmur were fully utilized for the sporting events like futsal, netball, soccer and athletics.
THE CLOSING CEREMONY
The closing ceremony was officiated by YAM Tengku Muda Pahang, Tengku Abdul Rahman Sultan Ahmad Shah.
And the comperes at the Stadium for the night who really added hilarious comments to the fun were popular television and radio deejays Aznil Nawawi, Raja Azura and Linda Onn.
Like all similar sports occasions, the final of the soccer or football event was held as the highlight of the FMI 2006. The soccer final was between RTM and KRU. Although RTM tried hard, the game was won by KRU, winning by 1-0.
After the soccer final, the closing ceremony began with a march past and assembly of all contingents in the middle of the field. Then it was followed by the presentation of medals to winners in all categories and events. And it ended with the much awaited announcement of the FMI Challenge Trophy or Cup to the overall winner, handed by the YAM Tengku Muda Pahang himself.
Well, the RTM contingent dominated this 2nd Edition of FMI when they collected the most points from the games and sports events held, and therefore won the FMI Cup for 2006.
(For information, last year's (2005) Fiesta Media Idola over-all winner was KRU, followed by Kelab Sukan Shahzan Muda and Astro.)
Then the FMI flag was lowered by 8 staff of the Royal Malaysian Navy. It was folded and given to YAM Tengku Muda Pahang for safekeeping until next year’s ceremony.
The Fiesta Media Idola 2006 came to a close with songs by famous and popular singers, including Mawi, Zahid and Ning Baizura and Indonesian singers. And then there were displays of dazzling fireworks around the Stadium, to finally close the festivities.
UNTIL NEXT YEAR
So the Fiesta Media Idola 2006 held in Kuantan was a real success, with thanks and appreciation to YAM Tengku Muda Pahang, for making it a reality again.
The Malaysian and Pahang fans of the entertainment stars, especially the Kuantan folks, having been treated to a fun-filled and enjoyable occasion, really can expect and look forward to a bigger event in 2007.
Real fun, friendly and joyful entertainments from the stars and superstars of the Malaysian artistes and mass media, plus the smooth event management of the Fiesta Media Idola 2006, with Kuantan playing a good host as well, had all made the Fiesta Media Idola 2006 a successful event.
